8-year old Pan Xianhang from the Eastern China Province of Wenling, has a genetic
disease, Icthyosis, which causes the skin all over his body to be covered in thick, scales.
Called “Fish-Boy” by neighbors because of the way the scales look, Pan’s condition causes
him extreme pain, constant itching and overheating.
According to The Huffington Post. as many as 16,000 babies a year are born with some form
of the disease, but the severity of Pan’scondition has affected the shape of his ears, nose
and eyelids and limits movement in his arms and legs.
There is no known cure for Icthyosis, and doctors can do little more than try to relieve the
symptoms with cold water and a thick cream to keep the scales from cracking.
